Sri Lanka Imports Potassium Chloride for Organic Farming: What Does This Mean?

 30,000 MT of Potassium Chloride  Fertilizer required for the Maha season was unloaded at the Port of Colombo today (13).

The fertilizer imported from Lithuania by the ship Vegorus will be sent to the Agrarian Development Centers in Ampara, Batticaloa, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Trincomalee and Hambantota tonight (13).

But experts say KCl or Potassium Chloride can not be considered as an " organic fertilizer " and is still a chemical fertilizer. Then it is the importation of chemical fertilizer despite the recent ban on chemical fertilizers in the country. However, Sri Lankan Agriculture Minister claimed KCl as an organic fertilizer
on his social media as the Department of Agriculture confirmed it as a " Organic fertilizer " with natural or the mineral origin . Accordingly, with the receipt of this stock of fertilizer, arrangements have been made to provide the required organic fertilizer to paddy farmers in other districts as well, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture recently.
