Sri Lankan customs blocks Organic fertilizer imported from Tamil Nadu

Sri Lanka Customs has seized three 40-foot containers of organic fertilizer imported from Tamil Nadu, India, a senior Sri Lanka Customs official said.

A senior customs official said that the three containers were imported from an unregistered company in Madurai. The address of the importer mentioned in the documents handed over at the time of importation was also suspicious.

77881.41 kilos of fertilizer in these three containers have been imported from a company in the Colombo 12 area, and the containers are stored at the Orugodawatta Grayline Container Terminal.

The Senior Customs Officer said that no license has been issued by the Department of Agriculture to import this stock of organic fertilizer and that samples have not been taken and tested according to the Plant Quarantine Act.

The Importation of Organic Fertilizers has been banned under the Plant Protection Act, 1999, to prevent micro-organisms and various fungi into Sri Lanka.
