How to grow Ginger Organically : A complete guide

 Site selection and management 

You have to select a well-drained land with no past history of pests and diseases, especially soft rot and bacterial wilt. Do not select a place that is nearby to livestock rearing and poultry. Because the waste from the animals may contaminate Ginger.

Planting materials

Select disease-free planting material for the cultivation. The seed Ginger can be treated with Trichoderma fungus or other bio-agent to reduce the risk of infection of any fungal diseases. Then the Seed Ginger must be stored in a dry place protected from the rain.

Land preparation and  establishment 

Prepare the raised beds with 95cm width and 

The solarization of the Ginger beds can be done 2 weeks before the establishment of Ginger. The lowest gauge transparent polythene has to be selected for cultivation.

Soil management

The organic compost can be applied in (3-5 tons/hectare) rates for Ginger cultivation. Apply Trichoderma fungus once in two weeks.


Mulching 

You can have a rice straw or paddy husk as a mulch.

Farm maintenance/pest and disease management 

The Trichoderma can be applied to minimize the risk of Fungal infections to Ginger.


Agrochemicals and chemicals 

Do not use any non-organic agrochemical, if you are intended to grow the Ginger organic way.

Harvest and postharvest 

Proper harvesting tools have to be used. Wash the tools before and after using them in the field.

Packaging and transportation

Use proper plastic crates for the transportation of the Ginger.
