The government of Sri Lanka banned the importation of turmeric to promote the country’s agriculture. It has now become the “new gold “for rural farmers. As turmeric gives more profits than in previous years, farmers are harvesting it in the early stages to make profits out of it.

The Agriculture Department of Sri Lanka has issued a warning
to the farmers who harvest turmeric in the early stages. The Department says that
it may bring the possibility of seed turmeric scarcity in the future. 5000 metric
tons of seed turmeric are required to
plant in the next season in 2021.
About 6-7 kg of matured turmeric is needed to produce the 1kg of dry turmeric powder while 10-12 kg of immature turmeric is required to produce 1kg of dry powdered turmeric. It is obvious that farmers are getting low income when compared to harvesting in the mature stage.
The Department of Agriculture in Sri Lanka requires farmers to wait until the harvesting season to get a good price for turmeric and ensure the future production of turmeric within the country as 25,000 metric tons are expected at the end of the season of turmeric in Sri Lanka.
